Harmful Effects of Smoking

  1.  Smoking harms every organ in your body, causes many diseases, and in general reduces a person's health. Therefore a person that smokes has a lifetime expectancy lower than a person that does not smoke. The many diseases that increase when you smoke include: cardiovascular disease (because smoking damages blood vessels), respiratory disease (by damaging your airways and the alveoli in your lungs), and various amounts of cancer (such as blood, esophagus, lung, etc). In addition to these harmful effects, smoking can also make it harder for a woman to become pregnant and can also effect a baby after birth, example of after birth effects include low birth weight and/or down syndrome.
  2. Statistics:
  • Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States, that is 1 in 5 deaths.
  • Smoking causes more deaths than the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Illegal Drug Use, Alcohol Use, and Motor Vehicle Injuries combined.
  • Smoking increases the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke by 2 to 4 times.
  • The figures represent the percentage of the population who are current smokers
       3. 90 percent of adults have reported to have started smoking before age 18.
       4. You can promote non-smoking by not smoking and giving others an example of what a healthy human being looks like, then hopefully others look and learn from you. Another way you can promote non-smoking is with social media, which is a big thing in today's society.
