Current Health Related Issue (The Flu)

  1. According to The Washington Post there is a very fierce flu epidemic going around the Washington Region.
  2. The district of Washington has reported an increased amount in patients at doctor's offices showing up with horrible cases of headache, nausea, fever, and muscle aches. Health officials have counted 382 new influenza cases in just the first two weeks of January, and there were all reported to be in the city since October, which is when flu season came. Many schools have also reported a rise in absences due to the illness. As well as the nine county hospitals who stated on Tuesday that they would bar from their facilities all children under the age of twelve and any person experiencing flu symptoms. Across Maryland alone 208  people tested positive for the flu for the second week of January. The number of children that have died, 30, is also sadly a record amount. In addition to all of this madness many places have run out of vaccination. For example a CVS pharmacist had said in December the 1,000 flu shots that were given to her ran out.
  3. The people involved int his event is the Washington region. In addition Maryland and Virginia were also mentioned in the article with having a record breaking number of patient's with the flu.
  4. Health officials and faculties are doing many things to help out this issue. For example, some hospitals are setting up tents to triage the overflow of patients. Officials also issued a warning on Tuesday about widespread cases of the flu and urged about the necessary precautions that should be taken, such as getting your flu vaccination.

  6. I believe this is a huge safety issue that should be talked about more. I mean I had to research this issue just to learn about the 30 children that have dies from the flu. My mom has always gave me warnings about the flu but we should have more conversations about this topic here at school.
